My students were excited to see about half of the fry rising to the top of the net box on Thursday. On Friday I left the fluorescent light on for a while and even more came to the top.  We added food at the end of the day and made sure we sank some.  Some aggressively hit the food almost immediately!  Still a lot resting on the bottom.  I would expect most of them to be swimming up by Monday.  We’re still waiting for the chiller for our other room which should be arriving soon.  I guess we’ll keep them in the net boxes for a few more days before we release them into the main tank.  Next week, I’ll have my classes do the food calculation problem.  I’ll also be showing off the project on “Parent’s Night” this Tuesday.  Jess, I’ll send you some recent pictures to post including “Ed & Eddie” our Siamese twins.

I keep mine in the nets until winter break…..since they are soooooo small …we can manage them better with feeding and counting……We have an extra net for cleaning up…

Thanks for the info, James.  I was worried about keeping them in the net boxes until my partner Dave gets his chiller repaired.  Now I know they’ll be ok.  Most all of them were swimming up today and noticably taking food.  The “twins” are still surviving, but I don’t know for how long.  Tomorrow I’m going to take the covering off the tank in one class and do some chemical testing.  We have a base line and have to start making comparisons.  So far…so good.

I will post a photo later today or tomorrow.  My set up is recessed in what used to be a double closet with the doors removed, so it’s kind of out of the way. I usually have the students embellish the area with their own artwork (which we haven’t done yet)...probably after Thanksgiving.  I sent for a blow up of “Bruce” the shark from “Finding Nemo” which hangs to one side of the tank.  You can sort of see the setup in my Bio photo, but I’ll find a better one to send in.  Thanks for being interested.

Chuck, I also keep mine in the breeder box for a few months. I can keep track of them a lot easier in there.

A surprising return from T-day vacation.  One of my students noticed a single fish had escaped one of the net boxes.  I’m still housing my partner Dave’s fish due to another delay in getting a refurbished chiller for his room.  As it turns out, the escapee is an albino…our 1st!!!  After discussing it with Dave, we decided to release my fish and keep his in the net box.  What a wonderful sight to see their acclimation to the big tank.  We only lost 3 over the weekend and only a couple have not ventured out of the sunken box.  We’ll just have to take it one day at a time.
