A natural first question we’ll be asked is “how big can my image attachments be?”

The system is currently set up to allow members to enclose up to five files totaling 5MB in size. Images may be 2000 pixels x 2000 pixels in size, although in practice, an image this size is likely to exceed the 5MB limit. Being mindful of storage and bandwidth usage, we can adjust these limits upwards or down as your post-launch experience suggests.

For best performance, images should generally be optimized for web display before uploading, although I recognize that this advice is hard to enforce when digital cameras routinely produce megapixel images.

To limit runaway bandwidth demand, photographs will initially appear in posts as a 150 pixel x 150 pixel thumbnail that can be clicked to view the full-size image in a separate pop-up window.

Currently, files for PDFs or other non-photographic attachments will display as text links in posts. I will investigate providing a set of common icons for the system to use when it displays a linked document other than photos.
