Could you provide some guidelines on how to determine the gender of our brook trout?  In mature fish our students discovered that a look at the fish’s gonads can be an accurate way to determine gender.  We are looking for a decent method for determining the sex of our fry.

Thank you.

Southern Regional High School would like to thank Fred Feldman from the Manasquan Environmental Center.  Fred was kind enough to donate over two dozen fry for our tank.  In addition we would like to thank Paul Osborne from the Jersey Shore Chapter of Trout Unlimited.  Paul delivered this re-stock on one days’ notice.  Thanks again, we really appreciate the help.

Unfortunately, at this early in their lives, you can’t tell the difference. Once the males reach about 1 year in age, they will start to develop the characteristic hooked jaw or kype found in all male salmonids.
