You have to use Quicktime to see our fish, not a web browser.

I like it because we can see the fish actively swimming, the temperature of the water and the flow from the filter - all from a remote location.

We lost ALL of our fish at around 5” in length last May after our chiller was inadvertently unplugged for a weekend, and this is now our new solution. It is easy for me to monitor the tank from home.

Directions for Quicktime:

Open Quicktime, go to FILE, then OPEN URL… and paste the link below in and it should work. If not, I can give you specific quicktime settings that should make it run.

rtsp://rhsstreamit.rih.org/live/ihhs_live.sdp

GOOD LUCK AND LET ME KNOW IF IT WORKS FOR YOU.

1st day back after Christmas vacation. We did a 35 gal. water change before Christmas and all chemical levels were more than acceptable with only a slight elevation of nitrates. I came in to feed the fish twice during the vacation, Mon & Wed., so the maximum time the fish went without food was 5 days. Only one individual didn’t make it. Water chemistry was our focus in class today. I intend to include the topic on our Midterm exam. Growth, activity levels (including signs of aggression), & overall appearance are excellent. Students were excited to see how much they grew during the time we were off. One cool addition to our classroom routine is the use of an “Official” TIC journal book that I had made on Snapfish. The cover is a collage of last year’s photos from eyed eggs to the hatch date and various stages of growth to their eventual release. I will send a photo in from home later today. Happy New Year everyone!

My students were excited to see about half of the fry rising to the top of the net box on Thursday. On Friday I left the fluorescent light on for a while and even more came to the top. We added food at the end of the day and made sure we sank some. Some aggressively hit the food almost immediately! Still a lot resting on the bottom. I would expect most of them to be swimming up by Monday. We’re still waiting for the chiller for our other room which should be arriving soon. I guess we’ll keep them in the net boxes for a few more days before we release them into the main tank. Next week, I’ll have my classes do the food calculation problem. I’ll also be showing off the project on “Parent’s Night” this Tuesday. Jess, I’ll send you some recent pictures to post including “Ed & Eddie” our Siamese twins.
