Many of you have asked how best to care for the young fry during the upcoming holiday break. If you are concerned about feeding during the Holiday recess coming later in December and it is not feasible for you to come into your classroom, I suggest befriending your school’s custodial staff.
You will find that they are also very enthusiastic, so warn them not to overfeed the young fry if you employ their help! I also know some of you live close by your schools and have need to feed other fish or reptiles, so you can care for your trout at the same time. If this is not the case for your situation, the custodian is the teacher’s best friend! Please note that your fish can survive 8-10 days without food. If you do plan to feed your fish over the break, I suggest a limited amount and number of times so that you don’t have a spike in ammonia levels. It is also a good idea to change your water before leaving on break and doing a second one, if possible, during or immediately after break.
