How do the fish leave the net breeder? When do we begin feeding?

Friday, October 20th, 2006

Are you wondering how the fish leave the net breeder and enter the rest of the tank?  If not how, then when?  Are they to be fed right after they hatch?  How much food do they need?  All good questions and all have simple answers.  (This does not affect those schools that are using vibert boxes with the exception of when to begin feeding)

  1. Leave the eggs in the net breeders until they have fully hatched and the majority have absorbed their egg sacs.  Dead or unfertilized eggs can be gently removed at any time.
  2. Make certain that the eggs and later, the sac fry, are near a good source of dissolved oxygen (DO) such as underneath the air stone.
  3. After some of the fry have absorbed their egg sacks, it is time to begin a LIGHT feeding regimen.  Please refer to the feeding guidelines posted on the site for more information.  Remember, "less is more".  It is easy to overfeed the fish and this can cause numerous other problems.
  4. Once the fry have absorbed their egg sacks fully and have become free swimmers, it is time to lower the net breeder into the tank so that the fry will swim out and populate the tank.  Remember to protect the young fry from being sucked in to the intake for the chiller and the filter!

How can we ensure that the fry will not be sucked into the filter and or powerhead for Chiller? The powerehead for the chill does have the sponge pre-filter which should help…..how about the filter intake? maybe something over it but need to make sure filter isnt being strained.???
Thanks

Kevin,
We recommend using a small piece of a ladie’s old stocking. A rubber band or string will secure it to keep the alevin from being sucked up.
